Does Your Hair Need Protein or Moisture?
Are you sometimes confused with the different things people tell you to do with your hair? Often, we complicate haircare and make it way more challenging than it needs to be. The balance of protein and moisture is no exception. Many people focus on moisture only, but you should take into consideration protein as well!
Now let’s discuss what moisture is, moisture is WATER. No exception. So, products that have water as the main ingredient could be considered moisturizing. The best way to moisturize your hair is to keep water in your strands. This can be achieved through wash day with soaking your hair in water, deep conditioning your hair and even your leave-in conditioner. Often people with curly hair say moisture is the key to grow your hair because it helps to eliminate breakage which is true but there is such thing as over moisturizing your hair which is called hygral fatigue. This brings us to the balance of moisture and protein!
Protein helps strengthen your hair and reconstructs your hair strands. If your hair is feeling weak, has lost elasticity, or is limp it may need a protein treatment. Too much protein will make your hair stiff and your hair will feel dry and break off. However, protein treatments in combination with proper moisture will allow your hair to be it’s healthiest therefore allowing you to retain length and achieve the different styles you desire.
There are many different ways that you can achieve a balance of moisture and protein which includes doing protein an intense protein treatment monthly or incorporating a protein deep conditioner that has a balance of moisture and protein. I choose to use a balanced protein deep conditioner every other week since it is easier than doing a protein treatment and following it up with a different moisturizing conditioner. However, you should do what is best for your hair! My favorite protein treatment is Debutante Beauty’s Deep Work deep conditioner which is available at www.debutantebeauty.com.!
